What Is Aqiqah In Islam
Aqiqah is a sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Islam that is performed when a new baby girl or boy is born.
There are two main components of Aqiqah.
- Slaughtering goats/sheep
- Shaving the baby’s head
Rasoolullah ﷺ performed the Aqiqah for his grandsons Hassan and Hussain by sacrificing goats.
قَالَ عَقَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنِ الْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ رضى الله عنهما بِكَبْشَيْنِ كَبْشَيْنِ .
“The Messenger of Allah offered an ‘Aqiqah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain, may Allah be pleased with them, two rams for each.”
Performing Aqiqah is a way to express our gratitude to the Almighty for blessing us with a daughter or son.
It is also a form of sadaqah (charity) that removes any harm from the baby and gives him/her the protection of Allah SWT.
Time Limit – How To Calculate Aqeeqah Day?
The sunnah is to perform is to perform Aqiqah on the seventh day of a child’s life. You will calculate it from the day of the child’s birth.
So, for example, if a child is born on Monday, his/her Aqiqa will be performed on the following Sunday.
However, if, for any reason, a person does not perform Aqiqah for his child on the seventh day, it can be done any time.
What Are The Aqeeqah, Sunnahs, Dua, And Rules For Baby Boy
Performing aqiqah is a very straightforward sunnah. Let me share the step-by-step process for the aqeeqah of a baby boy.
Dua (Niyat) For Baby Boy
Before slaughtering the Aqiqah goats, the first thing is the niyat (intention) and dua of Aqiqah for a baby boy.
Start by reading the Dua of Bakrid Qurbani and then read the following dua
’’بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ اَللّٰهمَّ لَكَ وَإِلَیْكَ عَقِیْقَة فُلَانٍ.‘
Translation:
In the name of Allah, and Allah is the greatest, O Allah! I perform the Aqiqah of [this person] to seek your pleasure”
Here, take the name of your newborn son in place of فُلَانٍ (this person)
Then, read the following dua
’’اَللّٰهمَّ هذِہٖ عَقِیْقَةُ ابْنِيْ فَإِنَّ دَمَها بِدَمِه وَلَحْمَها بِلَحْمِه وَعَظْمَها بِعَظْمِه وَجِلْدها بِجِلْدِہٖ وَشَعْرَها بِشَعْرِہٖ، اَللّٰهمَّ اجْعَلْها فِدَائً لِابْنِيْ مِنَ النَّارِ.‘‘
Translation
“O Allah! this is the aqiqah sacrifice of my son, so its blood for his blood, its flesh for his flesh, its bones for his bones, its skin for his skin, and its hair are in place of his hair. O Allah! make this a source of protection for my son from hellfire.”
What to do with Aqiqah Meat and How to distribute it?
You can keep the aqiqah meat all for yourself. But the better way is to distribute some of it among the poor, send some to your relatives, and keep some for yourself and your family.
Since the new mother needs energy at this time, make sure you keep enough meat for her as well.
Sacrificing Goats For Baby Boy
So, how many goats should you sacrifice for the aqiqah of a baby boy?
Rasoolullah ﷺ commanded his Companions to sacrifice 2 goats in the aqiqah of a baby boy. However, if someone cannot afford two goats, they can offer one goat as well.
And if they can’t afford even one goat, they shouldn’t worry because performing aqiqah is not mandatory.
Naming The Baby Boy
Ideally, you should name your baby boy on the seventh day, the day of Aqiqah. You can choose any Islamic name with a good meaning for your son.
Rasoolullah ﷺ considered Abdullah and Abdur Rahman as the best names for boys. But you can also consider names of the Prophets, Sahaba, or any pious elders of the ummah.
The important thing is that the name should have a good meaning and it should be easy to pronounce in your country. Otherwise, if people find it too hard to pronounce, they might make fun of the name.
Shaving Baby’s Head
After sacrificing the Aqiqah animal, it’s time to shave your son’s head. You can do it before slaughtering the animal. But the better way is to do it once the animal has been slaughtered.
Collect your child’s hair and give silver (or its price) in sadaqah equal to the weight of those hairs.
This completes the Aqiqah of your son.
What Are The Aqeeqah Dua And Rules For Baby Girl
The aqiqah of a baby girl is performed the same way as a boy. But there are minor differences in their duas and a few other things.
Dua For Baby Girl
Start the aqiqah sacrifice by reading this dua (the same as the one for boys)
’’بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ اَللّٰهمَّ لَكَ وَإِلَیْكَ عَقِیْقَة فُلَانٍ.‘
Then read the following Aqiqah dua for your baby girl( daughter)
’’اَللّٰهمَّ هذِہٖ عَقِیْقَةُ بِنْتِيْ فَإِنَّ دَمَها بِدَمِهَا وَلَحْمَها بِلَحْمِهَا وَعَظْمَها بِعَظْمِهَا وَجِلْدها بِجِلْدِهَا وَشَعْرَها بِشَعْرِهَا، اَللّٰهمَّ اجْعَلْها فِدَائً لِابْنَتِيْ مِنَ النَّارِ.‘‘
The only difference in this dua from the one for boys is in its grammar. This one is about girls, the first one was about boys.
Sacrificing Goats For Baby Girl
Prophet Muhammad commanded his companions to sacrifice at least one goat for the aqiqah of a baby girl.
This is the Sunnah of the Prophet.
Naming The Baby Girl
Just like baby boys, baby girls also deserve to be named after the Prophet’s wives and the pious women of the Ummah.

Shaving Baby Girl’s Head
And finally, after performing the slaughter, you can shave your newborn daughter’s head to complete the Aqiqah.
Again, keep the hair, weigh it, and give silver in charity equal to the weight.
Doing Sunnah Of Tehneek
Tehneek is a forgetten sunnah. But it has long-term benefits for your child. So, if possible, try to follow it.
What is tehneek?
When a baby was born, its parents used to take it to Rasoolullah ﷺ who would chew a very tiny part of a date and then attach it to the child’s gums. This way, the child slowly consumed it along with the Prophet’s saliva.
This tradition was followed by Sahaba even after the Prophet had passed away.
So, people used to take their newborn babies to any pious scholar or elders and request them to perform tehneek.
Today, you can follow this sunnah by taking your newborn to any pious elder in your family or Islamic community.
However, make sure they’re not suffering from any viral diseases.
Aqiqah Kya Hota Hai?
Aqiqah Allah ke Rasool ﷺ ki ek sunnat hai jo is liye ada ki jati hai takay hum aulaad kinaimat ka shukr ada kar sakain aur uski taraf se sadqah kar sakain takay Allah Taala usko beemario aur pareshianio se bachae.
Aqeeqay main 2 kaam kiye jatay hain.
- Bakra ya bakri zibah ki jati hai
- Bachay ke sar ke baal utaar diye jatay hain.
Aqiqah ek sunnat hai jo maaldar logo ke liye hai. Is liye agar kisi ke paas itna maal na ho to woh aqiqah na karay.
Sahi Waqt Aur Din Kya Hai Aur Kab Karna Chahye?
Aqiqah karnay ka Sunnat tarika ye hai ke 7th day kia jae. Yani agar bacha Monday ko peda hua to aglay Sunday ko Aqiqah hoga.
Aqiqah Ki Dua Aur Sunnat Tarika In Urdu
Aqiqah karna bohat asan hai. Ayye iska tarika seekhtay hain.
Step 1: Dua Parhna
Sabse pehle Aqiqa ki niyat aur dua parh lain. Ye Dua ladkay ke liye alag hoti hai aur ladki ke liye alag.
Ap ye dua Aqiqa ka janwar zibah karne se pehle parhengay.
Dua Ladki Ke Liye
Sab se pehle woh dua parh lain jo Baqra Eid ki qurbani se pehle parhi jati hai. Uske baad ye dua parhain.
’’بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ اَللّٰهمَّ لَكَ وَإِلَیْكَ عَقِیْقَة فُلَانٍ.‘
Allah ke naam se Aur Allah sab se bara hai, Aay Allah main teri riza ke liye [is bachi] ka aqiqa karta hu
Dua ke akhir main lafz فُلَانٍ ki jaga apni beti ka naam lain.
Uske baad ye dua parhain.
’’اَللّٰهمَّ هذِہٖ عَقِیْقَةُ بِنْتِيْ فَإِنَّ دَمَها بِدَمِهَا وَلَحْمَها بِلَحْمِهَا وَعَظْمَها بِعَظْمِهَا وَجِلْدها بِجِلْدِهَا وَشَعْرَها بِشَعْرِهَا، اَللّٰهمَّ اجْعَلْها فِدَائً لِابْنَتِيْ مِنَ النَّارِ.‘‘
Aay Allahye meri beti ke aqiqah ka janwar hai, iska khoon meri beti ke khoon ki jaga, iska gosht uske gosht ki jaga, iski haddia uski haddio ki jaga, iski khaal uski khaal ki jaga aur iske baal uske baalo ki jaga. Aay Allah is qurbani ki barakat se meeri beti ko jahannum ki aag se bacha.
Dua For Ladka
Ladkay ke aqiqa ki bhi yehi duain hain bas us main He or She ka farq hai.
’’بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ اَللّٰهمَّ لَكَ وَإِلَیْكَ عَقِیْقَة فُلَانٍ.‘
’’اَللّٰهمَّ هذِہٖ عَقِیْقَةُ ابْنِيْ فَإِنَّ دَمَها بِدَمِه وَلَحْمَها بِلَحْمِه وَعَظْمَها بِعَظْمِه وَجِلْدها بِجِلْدِہٖ وَشَعْرَها بِشَعْرِہٖ، اَللّٰهمَّ اجْعَلْها فِدَائً لِابْنِيْ مِنَ النَّارِ.‘‘
Step 2: Bakra Zibah Karna
Iske baad aqiqa ka janwar zibah kar dain Allah ki riza ke liye.
Ladkay Kay Aqiqay Main Kitne Bakray Honay Chahye
Rasoolullah ﷺ ka farman hai ke ladkay ke aqiqay ke liye 2 bakray qurban karna afzal hai. Lekin agar kisi ki gunjaish na ho to ek bakra bhi kar sakta hai
Larki Ke Aqeeqah Main Kitne Bakray Hone Chahye
Ladki ke aqiqa ke liye Rasoolullah ﷺ ne kam az kam 1 bakra zibah karne ka hukm dia.
Bakra Kaisa Hona Chahye
Aqiqa ka janwar bakra ya bakri ho sakta hai. Ar uski wohi sharit hain jo Qurbani ke janwar ke liye hoti hain.
Gosht Kaise Taqseem Karay
Aqiqah ka gosht taqsee karne ka afzal tarika ye hai ke thora ghareebo ko de dain, kuch rishtedaro ko de dain, aur thora khud rakh lain. Lekin agar sab gosht khud rakh lain to bhi sahi hai.
Khaas tor par agar maa ko bachay ki pedaish ke baad sehat mand khuraak ki zarurat ho to uske liye bhi gosht rakhna chahye.
Step 3: Bachay Ka Sar Mundwana (Ganja Karna)
Uske baad bachay ke sar ke baal mundwa dena chahye.
Phir in baalo ka wazan karke iske barabar chandi ya uski qeemat sadaqah karna chahye.
Step 4: Bachay Ka Acha Sa Naam Rakhna
Aqiqa walay din bachay ya bachi ka naam rakhna bhi sunnat hai.
Bacho ka naam Ambiya Ikraam, Sahaba Ikraam, ya Sahabiyaat ke naamo pe rakhna chahye.
Lekin agar koi aur naam bhi rakhain to uska matlab acha hona chahye aur usko bolna bhi asan hona chahye.
Step 5: Sunnat e Tehneek Karna
Sunnat e tehneek ye hai ke Rasoolullah ﷺ khajoor ka bohat chota sa naram hissa chaba kar bachay ke masooro ya taalu pe laga detay thay jisay woh choosta rehta tha.
Sahaba Ikraam bhi is sunnat ka ehtimam kartay thay.
Is liye apnay bacho ko kisi naik aalim e deen se tehneek karwai chahye.
Lekin bas ye dekh lena chahye ke jis se tehneek karware usko koi beemari na ho.
