What Is Attahiyyat (Tashahhud) In Namaz?
The Tashahhud position, commonly known as Attahiyat is a specific position in Salah (namaz) where the Musalli sits down on the floor and recites a set of duas.
Muslims are required to perform tashahhud in the second and fourth rakats of Namaz. However, in Maghrib and Witr salahs tashahhud is also performed in the third rakat.
What Duas Should We Read In Attahiyat (Tashahhud) Position
When you sit in the Tashahhud position, you’re supposed to read a specific set of duas depending on whether you’re in the second rakat tashahhud or the third or fourth rakat tashahhud.
If you’re performing tashahhud in the second rakat of a Namaz, you will recite the following:
- Complete Attahiyat Dua
However, if you’re performing tashahhud in the third or fourth rakats of a Namaz, you will recite the following duas:
- Complete Attahiyat Dua
- Durood e Ibrahimi
- Any Dua narrated by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Out of these duas, the Attahiyyaat Dua is mandatory for your Namaz to be valid. The other two duas are optional.
The Background Story & Origin Of Attahiyat (Tashahhud) Dua
You’ve learned the meaning of Attahiyat dua. But did you know there’s a story behind this dua as well.
While this story is not backed by any Sahih (authentic hadith) several scholars of Hadith have narrated it in their explanations of Attahiyat.
Here’s how it goes.
When the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was brought in the presence of Allah SWT during the Miraj, he praised Allah with the beginning words of Tashahhud
التَّحِیَّاتُ لِلَّہِ، وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّیِّبَاتُ
All verbal, practical, and financial acts of worship are solely for Allah.
In response, Allah Taala, said,
السَّلامُ عَلَیْکَ أَیُّہَا النَّبِیُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّہِ وَبَرَکَاتُہُ
O Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon you) may Allah’s mercy and His blessings descend upon you.
Upon this, the Prophet (PBUH) replied,
السَّلامُ عَلَیْنَا وَعَلَی عِبَادِ اللَّہِ الصَّالِحِینَ
‘Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s righteous servants.’
Then, Jibraeel (peace be upon him) who was watching this exchange from a distance, said
أَشْہَدُ أَنْ لا إلَہَ إلاَّ اللَّہُ وَأَشْہَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً عَبْدُہُ وَرَسُولُہُ
‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.’
But as I said earlier, this story is not mentioned in any authentic Hadith, so it’s accuracy is questionable.
