The Sunnahs of Using Toilet And Performing Istinja
As I said at the start, our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has described every small matter in great detail for his Ummah.
Here are the detailed Sunnahs of entering, using, and leaving the bathroom and toilet. Every person visits the toilet at least 3-4 times a day.
If we use it following these Sunnahs, our time in the washroom will become a source of reward in Akhirah.
Here are the Sunnahs.
- It is sunnah to enter the toilet with your head covered and wearing shoes or slippers.
- Read the Dua for entering the toilet.
- Enter the toilet with your left foot first.
- Crouch or lower your body before undressing.
- If you’re wearing a ring or anything with Quranic scriptures, leave it outside the toilet.
- When you sit in the toilet to defecate or urinate, do not face or put your back in the Qibla direction.
- Do not speak while using the bathroom unless it’s necessary.
- Sit down to urinate. Do not urinate while standing.
- Protect yourself from urine drops because it is among the reasons for punishment in Hellfire, according to Hadith.
- If available, use tissue paper to dry your urine first before performing Istinja.
- After drying your urine with a piece of tissue, wash it with water (perform Istinjah)
- While performing Istinjah (which means to wash your private parts after defecating or urinating) do not touch your private parts with the right hand. Instead, use your left hand to wash your genitals.
- Wash your hands after performing Istinja
- Flush your poop and make sure the washroom is clean and usable for others when you leave it.
- If you’re urinating or defecating in an open ground, do not do it in the middle of a pathway. Instead, go somewhere remote or near plants or trees where you can easily cover yourself and bury your poop.
- If possible, perform Wudu.
