All the Islamic rituals and major events like Eid, Hajj, and Ramadan are celebrated according to lunar dates.
This is why Islam emphasizes maintaining the Islamic calendar and using it in our day-to-day affairs.
To make this importance even more apparent, Rasoolullah ﷺ has taught us a Dua to recite when seeing the moon for the new month.
In this article, we’ll discuss this dua and understand its translation in English and Urdu.
Naye Islamic Month Ka Chand Dekhne Ki Dua
The Dua to read when sighting the new moon has been reported by Talhah Bin Ubaidullah رضي الله عنه in At-Tirmidhi.
He says that Rasoolullah ﷺ used to read the following Dua upon seeing the moon for the new Islamic month.
Arabic
Here’s the Arabic text of the Dua to read on sighting the moon for every new Islamic month.
Transliteration
Allahumma Ahillahu Alaeena Bil-Amni Wal-Eemaan, Was-Salamatee Wal-Islam, Rabbi wa Rabbuk-Allah, Hilalu Rushdin wa Khairin
English Translation
Here’s the English translation of the Dua for New Moon.
O Allah, let this moon appear on us with security and Iman; with safety and Islam. (O moon!) Your Rubb and mine is Allah. May this moon bring guidance and good.
Urdu/Hindi Translation
Naya Islami Mahinay Ka Chand Dekhne Ki Dua Ka Urdu/Hindi Tarjuma Ye Hai
Aay Allah, Is Chand ko Hamaray Upar Aman aur Eeman Ke Sath Layye, Aur Salamti Aur Islam Ke Sath. Aay Chand! Tera aur Mera Rab Allah hai. (Aay Allah) Ye Chand Hidayat Aur Khair Apne Sath Laye.
How To Read The Dua For New Moon Sighting
Rasoolullah ﷺ used to track the lunar dates and also instructed the Sahaba to do it.
So, when the moon used to complete its monthly cycle and the month started, Rasoolullah ﷺ used to look towards it and read this Dua (Naya chand dekhne ki dua).
So it doesn’t matter if the month is Muharram, Ramadan, Rajab, Shaban, or Zil Hajj.
This same dua is valid for every new moon in the Ismalic lunar calendar.
