How To Perform Hajj – Quick Step by Step Guide

Alhamdulillah I performed Hajj for the first time in 2022.

However, I have been attending Hajj training classes since 2008.

You know why? Once a scholar told me “You might not have the financial resources to perform Hajj yet, but show Allah your intent to perform Hajj by learning it thoroughly.”

All praise to Allah, He allowed me to perform this beautiful act of worship a few years later.

May Allah SWT accept it.

But when I performed Hajj I noticed that people get unnecessarily confused about various aspects of Hajj. It’s a simple act of worship where Allah wants us to connect with Him, seek His forgiveness, and fully submit to His will.

I’ve written this guide to simplify Hajj for you.

It covers all the essentials you need to perform Hajj. Plus, I’ve included my personal experiences and advice to make it easier for you.

And most importantly, it has been reviewed and approved by expert scholars.

So, keep it as a manual for performing Hajj.

But please consult a qualified scholar for any complex questions or fiqh-related Hajj issues.

A Quick Introduction To Hajj

Allah SWT has made it mandatory for all Muslim men and women to perform Hajj at least once in their lifetime IF they have the financial resources and health to do so.

The essence of Hajj is total submission to Allah’s will whether it makes sense to us or not.

Think about it.

Most of the things we do in Hajj make no logical sense.

Yet, we do it because we’re Allah’s servants, we can’t question His orders, and have to obey.

That’s what Hajj reminds us.

For example, when Allah SWT ordered Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ismail, did it make sense?

No.

But Abraham knew he couldn’t question Allah’s orders, so he obeyed.

Allah rewarded him for his obedience because He wanted us to understand the essence of Hajj and Islam.

Follow Allah’s orders without question.

Types of Hajj In Islam

There are three types of Hajj depending on where you’re coming from and how you want to perform it.

All three are correct.

Type #1: Hajj e Tamatto

In this type, you fly from your home country to perform Umrah. Once your Umrah is complete, you remove your Ihram, stay in Mekkah, and wait for the days of Hajj to start.

When 8th Zul Hijjah comes, you make a new Ihraam intention, this time to perform Hajj.

This is the most convenient Hajj type and most people who fly from other countries to Saudi Arabia perform Hajj e Tamatto.

This guide will mainly focus on Hajj e Tamatto. Other Hajj types will also be covered because they’re not very different.

Type #2: Hajj e Qiran:

In Hajj e Qiran, you fly from your country in Ihram with the intention to perform both Umrah and Hajj.

So, when to reach Mekkah and perform Umrah, you don’t shave your head or remove your Ihraam. Instead, you remain in Ihraam till the days of Hajj arrive.

Then, you perform Hajj with the same Ihraam and finally remove it after completing your Hajj.

This is the most virtuous Hajj type with the highest reward. Rasoolullah ﷺ also performed Hajj e Qiran.

If you’re young and healthy, go for this type.

Type #3: Hajj e Ifraad:

Hajj e Ifraad is for people living within the limits of Haram. In Hajj e Ifraad, you wear Ihraam to perform Hajj only.

The Days Of Hajj

Although most Hajj pilgrims travel to Mekkah for anywhere between 12 to 40 days, the actual Days of Hajj (Ayyam ul Hajj) are only five.

8, 9, 10, 11, and 12th Dhul Hijjah

These are the days when Hajj is performed.

Total Fardh (Mandatory) Actions In Hajj

Hajj has a lot of components. But 3 of them are Fardh (mandatory), meaning there’s no Hajj without any of these three actions.

Fardh #1: Wearing Ihraam and making Niyat of Hajj

Fardh #2: Staying (Wuqoof) in Arafat on 10th Dhul Hijjah

Fardh #3: Performing Tawaf uz Ziyarah anytime after stoning the devil on 10th Dhul Hijjah until sunset on 12th Dhul Hijjah.

We’ll talk about these Fardh components in more detail later.

Total Wajib (Critical) Actions In Hajj

There are six Wajib (critical) actions in Hajj.

  • Wajib #1: Perfoming Wuqoof in Mazdalifah after Fajr prayers.
  • Wajib #2: Stoning the Devils (Rami e Jamarat)
  • Wajib #3: Shaving or trimming your hair to exit Ihraam
  • Wajib #4: Performing Saee of Hajj (running between Safa and Marwa)
  • Wajib #5: Performing Tawaf ul Wida (for anyone coming from outside the Meeqat limits)
  • Wajib #6: Performing the following actions in sequence: 1. Stoning the devil –> 2. Performing sacrifice –> 3. Trimming/shaving hair.
  • Wajib #7: Sacrificing a goat, camel, cow, or sheep as to show gratitude to Allah for performing Hajj (Dam e Shukr) – this isn’t required for people performing Hajj e Ifraad.

Total Sunnahs In Hajj

There are 7 well-known Sunnahs and Mustahab actions in Hajj. Sunnahs are actions performed or recommended by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Performing them beautifies your Hajj and increases its chances of acceptance.

  • Sunnah #1: It’s a sunnah to perform Tawaf e Qudoom for those offering Hajj e Ifraad or Qiraan (not for Tamatto)
  • Sunnah #2: Doing Ramal (walking like a wrestler in the first three rounds of Tawaf) and Iztiba (exposing your right shoulder) in Tawaf e Ziarat and Qudoom.
  • Sunnah #3: Reaching Mina after Fajr on 8th Dhul Hijjah and performing 5 prayers there including the Fajr of 9th Dhul Hijjah.
  • Sunnah #4: Leaving for Arafat on 10th Dhul Hijjah AFTER sunrise.
  • Sunnah #5: Taking a bath in Arafat
  • Sunnah #6: Spending the nights of 9th, 11th, 12th, and 13th Dhul Hijjah in Mina (night comes before day in the Islamic calendar. For example, you’ll spend the night of 9th Dhul Hijjah in Mina then leave for Arafat after sunrise on the day of 9th Dhul Hijjah)
  • Sunnah #7: Stoning the devil on 13th Dhul Hijjah.

How To Perform Hajj Step-by-Step Guide

Since we’re mainly focused on Hajj e Tamatto, you will have to perform Umrah when you arrive in Mecca from your home country.

I have described the whole process of Umrah in this detailed guide, including how to perform Tawaf and Sa’ee of Safa and Marwa.

After Umrah, you will remove your Ihraam and remain in your regular clothes till you reach the Hajj days.

Here’s a step-by-step guide about the most important things to do on each day of Hajj.

Step #1: Ihram & Niyat (7th Dhul Hijjah)

Hajj starts on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah.

But in most cases, you’ll be shifted to Mina on 7th Dhul Hijjah due to logistical and administrative reasons.

Before leaving your hotel for Mina, wear Ihraam and then offer 2 Rakat Nafil like normal prayers (if it’s not a prohibited time – 20 mins till after Sunrise, 30 min before Zuhr, between Asr and Maghrib)

Then read the Talbiyah and make niyat of Hajj.

What is Ihraam for men & women, how do you wear it, and what are its restrictions?

Please read the following articles where I have covered everything in detail.

Step #2: Staying In Mina – 8th Zul Hijjah

Summary of things to do in Mina
– Stay in Mina on 8th Dhul Hijjah and remember Allah frequently through worship.
– Perform all the prayers with a congregation (Jamat).
– Guard your time, don’t waste it in useless discussions or scrolling your smartphone.

Whether you reach Mina on 7th Dhul Hijjah or 8th Dhul Hijjah, this is where your Hajj finally begins.

Mina will be your Hajj basecamp for the next 5 days.

mina camp B category Maktab 6

Click Here: Read my detailed guide to different Mina Camp Categories.

This is where you will spend most of your time.

And this is where most Hajis ruin their Hajj.

Let me explain.

There’s no specific prayer, dua or activity for Mina.

You’re only required to do one thing – offer all the prayers with Jamat on time.

The rest of the time? Spend it reciting the Holy Quran, remembering Allah SWT through zikr, and most of all, making a lot of Dua because this is where most Duas are accepted.

But Hajis waste their time in Mina on their smartphones, playing games, talking for hours with each other, and generally wasting their time.

Don’t do that.

Hajj is about connecting with Allah. So put down your smartphone and indulge yourself in worship. If you get tired, sleep or go sit with a scholar or a pious person and learn something from them.

But don’t waste time and ruin your Hajj doing gheebat (backbiting) or scrolling Facebook.

Advice About Mina Toilets
The toilets in Mina are often crowded, especially the ones inside the camps. So, you have to plan your toilet visits at least 30-40 minutes before every prayer. In my experience, it’s better to go to the toilets outside the camps on the main road because they’re cleaner and bigger. You can learn more about Mina camps in this guide.

Step #3: The Day Of Arafah – 9th Zul Hijjah

Summary of things to do in Arafat on 9th Dhul Hijjah
– Reach Arafat after Sunrise.
– Offer Dhur in your camp with Jamat
– Listen to the Hajj sermon online
– Perform Wuqoof e Arafah
– Offer Asr in your camp with Jamat (on Asr time)
– Continue Wuqoof till Sunset.
– Leave for Muzdalifah after sunset.

Read this detailed Arafat Day Guide for Duas, Zikr, and other things to do in Arafat.

After spending 8th Dhul Hijjah in Mina, you’re required to leave for Arafat after performing Fajr prayers on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah.

This is the Day of Arafah, the most critical day of Hajj.

arafat day hajj

Here’s what you need to do on this day.

  • Reach Arafat after Fajr on 9th Dhul Hijjah. Sometimes they’ll take you to Arafat on 8th Dhul Hijjah for logistical reasons. Cooperate with them.
  • Spend the day in Arafat and DO NOT leave this place under any circumstances before sunset.
  • The main Hajj Sermon is held in Masjid Namira in Arafat. It is also broadcast live on different platforms.
  • Don’t go to Masjid e Namira because it is overcrowded and even if you reach it, you’ll drain all your energy in getting back to your camp and waste precious time you could’ve spent in worship.
  • So, stay in your camps and listen to the sermon online.

Read: Guide to Arafat Camps

  • Here, you will offer Dhur and Asr prayers at their respective times in your camp.
  • From Dhur till Sunset is the time for Wuqoof e Arafah – standing in prayer making Dua.
  • It will probably be scorching during the day so don’t stand under the sun. Instead, find a tree or shaded area near your camp and stand under it to make dua for as long as possible.
  • If you get tired, come back to your camp and make dua while resting.
  • You will have a lot of time so make as much Dua as possible.
  • Stay well-hydrated throughout the day and always keep a chilled water bottle with you.
  • This is the most glorious day where no prayers are left unanswered, make it count.

How should you spend your time in Arafat, what dua should you make? I have covered everything in this detailed guide about the Day of Arafah.

At sunset, you won’t pray Maghrib prayers.

Instead, you’ll head towards Muzdalifah.

Step #4: Spending The Night In Muzdalifah

Summary of things to do in Muzdalifah
– Offer Maghrib and Isha together
– Collect 80-100 pebbles in a small bottle.
– Rest during the night.
– Perform Fajr early and stand in Wuqoof e Muzdalifah for 20-30 min.

We’re still talking about 9th Dhul Hijjah.

It’s Maghrib time, but you won’t offer prayers in Arafat.

Instead, you’ll leave your camp for Muzdalifah.

Once you reach Muzdalifah, you’ll find out it’s a barren ground with nothing around.

You have to spend the night here under the open sky.

spending the night muzdalifah - how to perform hajj

This is Allah’s way of showing us we’re all equal in His eyes.

Everyone from a billionaire to a beggar has to spend the night under the open sky. No camps, no buildings, no luxury.

Upon reaching Muzdalifah, you have to offer Maghrib and Isha prayers together.

Here’s how you’ll do it.

  • Give Azan, then say Iqamat, and offer Maghrib with Jamat with your Hajj fellows.
  • Then immediately after finishing Maghrib Fardh, give another iqamat for Isha and offer Isha Fardh.
  • After Isha Fardh, no offer Maghrib Sunnahs
  • Then offer Isha Sunnahs and Witr.

After performing Maghrib and Isha, your next jon is to collect at least 80-100 pebbles in a small bottle.

Why? Because from Muzdalifah you’ll go to Jamarat to stone the devil. You must carry the stones from Muzdalifah.

Look for pea-sized pebbles – not too small, not too big.

Muzdalifah is filled with millions of pebbles so you’ll have plenty to choose from.

Now it’s time to rest and refresh till Fajr.

While you rest, keep making dua, reciting whatever you remember, and connecting with Allah.

Just before Fajr time starts, offer 4-6 rakat Tahajjud and make dua.

When Fajt time starts, give Azan and offer Fajr with Jamat.

After Fajr, you will have to stand in prayer for 20-30 min. This is called Wuqoof e Muzdalifah.

Again, it’s just you making Dua.

Because Hajj is all about Dua and talking with Allah SWT at every step.

After performing Wuqoof, you will head back to Mina. But not your camps.

Instead, there’s a place in Mina called Jamarat Complex. This is where you will perform Rami, stoning the devils.

Step #5: Stoning The Big Devil (Rami e Jamarat) – 10th Zul Hijjah

Summary of Rami e Jamarat on 10th Dhul Hijjah
– Reach the Jamarat complex by sunrise.
– Stone the big devil with 7 pebbels.
– Leave for your Mina camp.

We’re now in the morning of 10th Dhul Hijjah.

Leave Muzdalifah 30-40 min after Fajr time and try to reach the Jamarat Complex in Mina by Sunrise.

jamarat complex mina hajj

Once you get there, you will see three big pillars. they’re the Jamarat or indications of the places where the devil tried to deceive Prophet Abraham and Ismail.

In response, they stoned the devil at these three which made him run away.

On 10th Dhul Hijjah, you need to stone the big devil only (the other two Jamarat are smaller).

The best time to do this is immediately after Sunrise like we’re doing.

But if you’re tired, you can do it till Sunset.

jamara - stoning the devil hajj

However, from experience, I recommend going at Sunrise. It will be crowded but don’t worry.

Once you reach the big devil in the Jamarat complex, don’t start stoning the devil immediately from the front side because that’s where it’s crowded.

Instead, go around to the other side of the devil and you’ll see that there’s hardly anyone there.

Now take 7 pebbles out from your bottle and throw them at the Devil (Jamara) one by one.

Every time you throw a stone read this dua

بسم الله، والله أكبر رغماً للشيطان وإرضاءً للرحمن

Transilteration: Bismillahi Allahu Akbar, Raghman Lish Shaeetawn Wa Rizan Lir Rahmaan

Translation: In the name of Allah and Allah is the Greatest. (I do this) to humiliate Satan and to please the Most Merciful (Allah)

Make sure every pebble hits the Jamara.

Once you throw all the seven pebbles, don’t stop for Dua and leave straight for your Mina camp.

Step #6: Performing Sacrifice (Dam e Shukr)

We’re still in 10th Dhul Hijjah.

You’ve performed Rami e Jamarat (stoning the devil) and are now back in your Mina camp.

Now you’ll wait for confirmation of your Hajj sacrifice (slaughtering an animal to thank Allah).

WARNING: Do not shave or trim your hair before your animal is slaughtered.

It is mandatory to to perform the following actions in sequence

  • Perform Rami
  • Slaughter animal
  • Shave/trim your hair.

Once you get the confirmation of your Dam e Shukr (Hajj sacrifice) from your Hajj group leader, only then proceed to the next step.

Step #7: Shaving The Head Or Trimming Hair

Once your animal has been slaughtered, you can now shave your head. Trimming your hair is also allowed but the right way to do it is by trimming the whole head equally from all sides by cutting at least an inch.

Women also need to trim their hair but they’re only required to trim an inch of their hair tips.

You can help them with this.

women-cut-hair-umrah-ihram

The moment you perform this action, you will exit Ihraam restrictions and can now wear regular clothes.

There’s only one restriction left – you can not have intimate relations with your spouse.

This restriction will be lifted after you perform Tawaf e Ziarat.

Step #8: Performing Tawaf e Ziarat – 10th Zul Hijjah

Read the detailed method of performing Tawaf in this guide with all the Duas and necessary details

Can you believe it, we’re still in 10th Dhul Hijjah.

Your Ihraam is removed and the only thing now left is Tawaf e Ziarat.

Performing this Tawaf is Fardh, mandatory for Hajj.

Here’s the hikmah behind it.

You’ve performed your Hajj, performed Wuqoof in scorching heat, and spent the night under the open sky in Muzdalifah.

You did all of this for the sake of Allah.

Now it’s time to meet Allah.

This is what Tawaf e Ziarat means.

You’re now visiting the King of Kings in His house, Masjid al-Haram.

WARNING: Do not go to perform Tawaf e Ziarat immediately after Rami e Jamarat, it’s VERY crowded and hot

You can do Tawaf e Ziarat any time from 10th Dhul Hijjah till the Sunset of 12th Dhul Hijjah.

But the best time to perform Tawaf e Ziarat is after Maghrib or Isha prayers on 10th Dhul Hijjah.

Till then, rest in your Mina camps and regain strength.

After performing Maghrib or Isha (whichever way you want), leave for Masjid al Haram in your regular clothes to perform Tawaf e Ziarat.

When you reach Masjid al-Haram, you’ll find that most of the crowd from the morning has left and you’ll be able to perform this Tawaf easily insha Allah.

Tawaf e Ziarat is performed like any regular Tawaf. Just make the intention of Tawaf e Ziarat before doing it.

During this Tawaf you will also perform Ramal (walking like a wrestler in the first three rounds of Tawaf).

Step #9: Sa’ee Of Hajj (Safaa Marwa)

After performing Tawaf e Ziarat, your next job is to perform the Sa’ee of Safa and Marwa.

This Sa’ee will be performed like any regular Sa’ee. You only need to make the intention of Hajj Sa’ee.

I have described the complete method of Sa’ee in this article.

saee of hajj safaa marwa

Congratulations, you are now completely out of Ihraam restrictions.

Now go back to your Mina camp and rest.

Step #10: Stoning All Three Devils – 11th Zul Hijjah

Now we’re in 11th Dhul Hijjah.

Apart from staying in your Mina camp, performing all prayers with Jamat, and indulging in various forms of worship, you have only one additional thing to do today – stoning all three devils in the Jamarat complex.

The time for this activity starts as you enter Zuhr time.

So offer Zuhr in your Mina camp with Jamat and then leave for the Jamarat complex in Mina.

When you reach the Jamarat complex, stone the smallest Jamara first. Then stand away from it facing the Qibla and make Dua.

Then stone the middle Jamara and make Dua the same way facing the Qibla.

And finally stone the Big Jamara (Devil) but don’t stop for Dua.

Instead, leave for your Mina camp.

Spend the remaining time in Mina camp.

Step #11: Stoning All Three Devils Again – 12th Zul Hijjah

Today is 12th Dhul Hijjah, again, the only additional thing today is stoning all three devils the same way we did on 11th Dhul Hijjah.

The time for this activity starts as you enter Zuhr time.

Once you stone the devils, you have a choice – you can go back to your hotel in Mecca or spend another night in Mina camp.

The more virtuous option and Sunnah is to stay.

But you can leave as well. In case you leave, your Hajj is completed ALhamdulillah.

OPTIONAL: Step #12: Stoning All Three Devils Again – 13th Zul Hijjah

If you stay in Mina till the Maghrib of 12th Dhul Hijjah, you will now have to stay here for another night and stone the devils the next morning.

This is optional but you should do it because it’s a sunnah.

Again, the time for Rami starts as you enter Zuhr time.

Stone all three devils the same way.

Now you can leave for your hotel in Mecca.

Hajj Mubarak! May Allah SWT accept it from you.

Step #13: Performing Tawaf ul Wida

The only thing left now is Tawaf ul Wida.

This is the final Tawaf you will perform when you’re leaving Mecca for your home. So whenever you’re leaving for home, perform this Tawaf.

There’s no Sa’ee after this Tawaf and you can perform it in your regular clothes.

You also don’t have to do Ramal in this Tawaf.

JazakhAllah Khair for this. I wonder, a hand drawn diagram and or map would also be useful to help highlight what is being done and where on each day.

Some things described seem extremely difficult for someone who is not young and with energy.

Are there any aspects that aren’t obligatory so that the risk of missing Arafat doesn’t happen?

What do you do if you can’t throw all the stones yourself (speaking as a female with some mild disability).

I would grateful for a diagrammatic representation of what you’ve written to download to also help orientate and understand.

Also, it is interesting how you had been planning for hajj for more than a decade prior. Alhamdulillah

May God reward you and accept from you.

Just a final note, in the videos for 2024 hajj, there were limitations on what the women could expect, and also the bathrooms I have to admit seem like a nightmare without any consideration by the organisers for the needs of women or anyone with disabilities, would you agree? I can only pray that the Saudi government don’t discriminate, but I felt sorry for the people in the crowded hot tents who also had to sleep together in such a way as to have it be so packed mattress wise / infection risks and body heat being high. Also, it feels highly uncomfortable having the women be situated directly opposite the men in the quarters. Is that due to families needing to be close to each other?

Hajj might seem overwhelming at first, but once you’re there, everything flows smoothly and becomes much easier than expected.

While you do need energy to perform Hajj, many modern facilities have made the journey much simpler than it was 10-15 years ago.

One common mistake is not learning the Hajj rituals beforehand. People often become nervous and try to rush through everything, but there’s no need for that.

Take your time and stay calm. There’s plenty of time for each stage, and since everything is done in groups, you won’t miss important parts like Arafat or Muzdalifah. Just stay with your group, especially experienced Hajis, and everything will fall into place. Allah makes it easy for those on this journey.

Yes, the heat can be intense, but there’s no need to be outside during the hottest hours. Stay in your camps, stay hydrated, and wait for the sun to set before performing outdoor rituals. Use the umbrellas and facilities provided, and avoid unnecessary walking in the heat.

In truth, the most challenging days of Hajj are the 9th and 10th of Zulhijjah, but even these aren’t as difficult as they might seem. Those who face difficulties like heatstroke are often the ones who go out during the hottest part of the day without consulting experienced Hajis.

May Allah invite us to perform this beautiful act of worship again and again.
