Is This An Authentic Dua From Hadith?
Unfortunately, no.
There’s no fixed Dua that you should read in the break after every 4 Rakats of Taraweeh. So, it is incorrect to consider this Dua a Sunnah.
However, it is a very good Dua that praises Allah SWT and seeks His mercy. So there’s no harm in reading it without considering it compulsory.
Is It Compulsory To Read Tasebeeh e Taraweeh?
Not at all.
It is not mandatory to read this Dua or any dua in Taraweeh. However, scholars have suggested this Dua because people usually start talking to each other or waste their time on useless things while the Imam takes a break after 4 rakat Taraweeh.
So, instead of leaving people idle, scholars suggest they read this Dua to make their time valuable.
But it is not compulsory.
The History Of Taraweeh Dua
So, if this Dua is not a sunnah or compulsory, where did it come from?
It is a combination of Duas and karmas found across various ahadith. Scholars put together this Dua for common people who didn’t know what to say or pray during the Taraweeh break.
Over the years, it has become very mainstream in Pakistani, Indian, and Bangladeshi communities because the people from these countries usually have a limited understanding of the Arabic language.
So, most Ulema and scholars suggest people in these countries memorize this Dua and read it during Taraweeh.
But in Arab countries, people do not read it as religiously as Asians.
It has become so mainstream that some people consider it a Sunnah and force others to read it.
That’s inappropriate. In fact, if you consider something optional as mandatory in Islam, it becomes a biddah (innovation).
So, you must understand that while this Dua has a beautiful meaning and there’s nothing wrong in reading it, it is NOT a sunnah or an authentic Dua from the Prophet.
The goal is to remember Allah SWT and indulge in some form of Zikr in the Taraweeh break. As long as you’re doing that, there’s no spec ific Dua that you must read.
What Should We Read After 4 Taraweeh Rakat?
So, if the famous Tasbeeh e Taraweeh is NOT mandatory, what else can we do in the Taraweeh break?
In short, any act of worship you want.
For example, you can read Durood Sharif all the time or frequently read Astaghfar. You can also open the Holy Quran and read it while the Imam takes a break.
Other Zikrs like Tasbeeh e Fatimi, Ayat ul Kursi, or Third Kalma can also be read. The goal is to remain involved in Zikr.
You can do it any way you want.
And just in case you’re tired, you can also remain silent. No issues.
